Time is running out for DTV transition: NTIA Encourages action now!

by DeeNice on May 30, 2009

With 15 days left until the end of the digital transition, the TV Converter Box Coupon Program is providing several reminders to our partners as you continue to make sure your constituents are prepared for the June 12 transition.

· Coupon Arrival Date: Coupons are still available for eligible households, and applications for coupons continue to be accepted online, over the phone, by mail and by fax. Since it typically takes nine business days to process and mail coupons, consumers who apply now may not receive their coupons in time for the June 12 transition.

· Three Options to Transition: To ensure unprepared consumers with over-the-air television reception have at least one TV that will continue to work after their local stations transition, there are three options: purchase a converter box without the coupon; subscribe to cable, satellite or other pay TV service; or purchase a TV equipped with a digital turner.

· Donating Coupons: While it is illegal to sell coupons, it is okay to donate them. Consumers who have an unexpired coupon they do not need may check with friends, parents or other family members who have an older antenna TV and need a coupon. By giving them your coupon, you can help to ensure they are ready for the June 12 digital transition and continue to receive important local news and information.

· Purchasing Converter Boxes: Consumers who choose to use a coupon toward the purchase of a TV converter box must use the coupon at the time of purchase. To find a participating retailer in your area, go to www.DTV2009.gov. Coupon-eligible converter boxes also may be purchased online or by telephone and shipped directly to your home.

More information can be found on the U.S. Commerce Department Web site .

As we reach the final weeks before the end of the transition, we especially appreciate your continued support in getting your constituents DTV ready.
